The Power of Partnership, Innovation and Learning

Shalyn Alton

Greetings! I graduated from Humboldt State University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology. My area of expertise is intertidal ecology (studying things that live in tidepools).

I think that learning science can be fun and empowering. Finding out what makes this world function helps us to understand the underlying mechanisms of everyday occurrences and observable phenomena; basically: science helps us understand how things work on this planet.

It is my belief that if we grow up understanding more about the world around us, we are more likely to care about what happens to it in the future. Additionally, if we are taught about our own role and responsibility in the maintenance of (or destruction of) planetary resources (like energy, water, land, plants, and animals), we will be more likely to invest personal effort into their future preservation. Furthermore, if we are encouraged and taught how to care for one another as fellow people, then we will have the key to our survival: working together toward common goals.

Population Education is not just some old saying from the past, it is a real movement that starts here in the classrooms with our children, teachers, parents, and community members working together to shed light on earth's future.

On a more personal note, I have a wonderful daughter who is attending high school; I am so proud of her! My favorite hobbies include tide-pooling, crafting, DIY projects, and nature walks. I really love our planet and the people on it, and I am passionate about understanding and loving them both as best as I can!

Thank you for the opportunity to share with and learn from your kids!
